The leadership of the House of Representatives yesterday denied knowledge of bribes being offered to some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and opposition lawmakers to impeach Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.
House spokesman, Zakari Mohammed, said the leadership is not aware that some members are collecting money to move against the speaker or any principal officer of the House.
Addressing newsmen, Mohammed said: “I am not aware of plots to remove the speaker. I am also not aware of our members being offered money to carry out the impeachment. We passed a vote-of-confidence in the speaker on Tuesday to show that he has the support of everybody to continue the good work he is doing.”
Mohammed’s denial is coming against the backdrop of allegation that some members of the PDP caucus, Labour Party (LP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and Accord Party (AP) members in the House are being offered a whopping bribe of $25, 000 to impeach the speaker.
A member of the House, who does not want his name mentioned, alleged that the bribe money was offered by a governor. He claimed that key beneficiaries of the underhand deal were members of the House against the Aljako Kawu Baraje New PDP. Also involved are some APGA, Labour Party, and Accord Party members.
Loyalists of the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and that of the factional Chairman of the party, Baraje, fought last Tuesday.
