Governors elected on the platform of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) have denied knowledge of a new deal between President Goodluck Jonathan, senators and the national leadership of the party, vowing to frustrate any such move aimed at shutting them out to the advantage of the senators.
This is coming barely 24 hours after there were reports that President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP National Working Committee may have reached agreement with the aggrieved senators of the party on their demand for automatic ticket in the 2015 elections.
According to Leadership report, the angry governors will storm Abuja today (Monday) with the intention to meet with the President and Muazu to thrash out the issues before the presidential declaration on Tuesday.
One of the governors affected by the peace deal said: “Both the President and the senators are on their own. We shall see what happens in the next one week.
“The reported deal cannot be true at all. You just ignore it. I believe some of the senators are trying to test the waters by spreading falsehood in the media.
“I can tell you that deal will not fly if at all it exists, because there is no way such could be arrived at without the governors in attendance.”
However, the national publicity secretary of PDP, Olisah Metuh said the party is yet to take a position and the public will be told the party’s position on the matter in due time.
The development may be connected with the sudden postponement of the PDP nomination processes across board.
“It is just normal that we extend in the face of fresh developments that are emerging by the day,” a source said in confidence.
The PDP extended its process of nominations into elective offices. The party shifted its national convention/presidential primaries to December 10, 2014. Initially, the party had fixed the presidential primaries for December 6, 2014.
It also shifted the governorship primaries from November 29 to December 8, 2014.
The shifting of the dates has led to the extension of deadlines for the submission of forms for governorship aspirants.
Recall that the Senate had abruptly adjourned sitting last week, to discuss ways on how to confront President Jonathan and the PDP over their displeasure with the conduct of their party’s ward congresses
